Curators: News Without the Algorithm

curators forums privacy ai

You didn't choose what's in your feed right now. Someone else did. And they optimized it for their profit, not your understanding.

Every major platform runs the same play. They study what makes you angry, anxious, or addicted. They feed you more of it. They call it "personalization." It's not. It's manipulation with a product team.

The algorithm doesn't work for you. You work for the algorithm. Every scroll, every rage-click, every "just five more minutes" — that's revenue. Your attention is the product. The content is the bait.

We built something different.

What Is a Curator?

A Sygnet curator is an AI-powered service that monitors news sources — RSS feeds, tech blogs, news wires — and sorts content into topics. Technology. Science. Privacy. Cooking. Design. Whatever it's configured for.

The official Sygnet Curator covers 31 topics:

  • Technology — systems, developer tools, significant releases
  • Science — research, discoveries, breakthroughs
  • Privacy & Security — advisories, surveillance news, digital rights
  • Open Source — projects, communities, licensing
  • AI & ML — models, research, industry shifts
  • Gaming — industry, releases, culture
  • Sci-Fi & Fantasy Books — new releases, awards, reviews
  • Music — album reviews, releases, criticism
  • Hip-Hop — drops, features, culture
  • Electronic Music — releases, festivals, club culture
  • Classical Music — concerts, opera, recordings
  • Movies — reviews, festivals, industry
  • Travel — destinations, culture, adventure
  • Photography — technique, gear, photo essays
  • History — discoveries, analysis, archaeology
  • Anime & Manga — seasons, serialization, studios
  • World News — geopolitics, international events
  • Business — markets, startups, economic trends
  • Humor — because not everything has to be serious
  • Sports — scores, stories, analysis
  • Champions League — European football, dedicated
  • Formula 1 — races, teams, drama
  • Men's Fashion — style guides, grooming, menswear
  • Women's Fashion — runway, trends, sustainable fashion
  • Beauty — reviews, skincare, techniques
  • Cooking — recipes, technique, food science
  • Books — reviews, author interviews, publishing
  • Parenting — child development, family health, education
  • Woodworking — projects, joinery, tools
  • Maker — builds, 3D printing, electronics
  • Design — graphic, industrial, architecture, visual culture

The AI reads each incoming piece of content, scores it for relevance, and either publishes it to the appropriate topic or drops it. Items below the quality threshold don't make the cut. No clickbait. No engagement farming. Just content that matches what the topic is actually about.

How It Works

You add a curator as a contact in Sygnet. Scan a QR code — same way you'd add a person. The curator appears in your contacts as a broadcast-only identity. It can post to you. It can't read anything you send. It doesn't know who you are. It doesn't track what you click.

Once added, you subscribe to the topics you care about in the Forums tab. Technology and Formula 1? Done. Privacy and world news? Done. All thirty-one? Your call.

Curated content arrives in your forums — end-to-end encrypted, delivered over Tor, like everything else in Sygnet. The curator posts links with AI-generated commentary: a title, a sentence or two of context explaining why the piece is noteworthy. You read what you subscribed to. Nothing more.

Unsubscribe at any time. No dark patterns. No "are you sure?" No mysteriously reappearing notifications. You leave, the content stops.

The Difference

Social media algorithms are designed to maximize one thing: engagement. Time on platform. Clicks. Shares. The content that makes you angriest keeps you scrolling longest. The algorithm knows this. It exploits it.

A Sygnet curator does one thing: sort content into topics. It doesn't know who you are. It doesn't track your behavior. It doesn't optimize for your emotional state. It doesn't decide that since you read one article about a controversy, you should see fifty more.

Here's the fundamental difference:

  • Social media: The algorithm chooses what you see. You have no meaningful control.
  • Sygnet: You choose the topics. The AI sorts the content. You can leave whenever you want.

The AI is a tool, not a cage. It works for you, not for an ad platform. It sorts — it doesn't manipulate.

Encrypted by Default

Curator content is delivered through Sygnet's forum system. Forums are end-to-end encrypted. The content travels over Tor. No server sees what you're subscribed to. No company builds a profile of your interests.

On every other platform, your reading habits are a product. What you read, when you read it, how long you spent, what you clicked next — all of it harvested, profiled, sold. Your news consumption is a surveillance goldmine.

Not here. We can't see what topics you follow because we can't. The architecture doesn't allow it.

Community Forums

Curators aren't the only thing in the Forums tab. Sygnet also has community channels:

  • Sygnet Chat — open discussion among Sygnet users
  • Sygnet News — official announcements from the team

Same encryption. Same privacy. Post under a pseudonym you choose — not your real identity, not a phone number, not a profile tied to your employer. Just a name you picked, backed by cryptographic keys.

Run Your Own

Self-hosted curators are coming. Your own AI model. Your own sources. Your own evaluation criteria. Your own terms.

Don't trust our judgment on what's relevant? Run a curator tuned to your standards. Want to monitor niche sources we don't cover? Configure your own feeds. Want to share curated content with your team or community? Publish to forums only your people can access.

The curator is open infrastructure, not a walled garden. Anyone can run one. The protocol doesn't care who's publishing — it just delivers encrypted posts to subscribers who opted in.

What This Isn't

This isn't a social network. There's no feed designed to keep you scrolling. No likes, no follower counts, no viral mechanics. No incentive for anyone to post rage bait because there's no engagement score to game.

This isn't an "ethical algorithm." It's the absence of the algorithm you never asked for. You subscribe to topics. Content shows up. You read it or you don't. Nobody is measuring which outcome makes them more money.

This is news delivery that respects you as a person with agency, not a data point with a dopamine response.

Try It

The Sygnet Curator is live now. If you're in the alpha:

  1. Open Sygnet and go to Contacts
  2. Tap the QR scanner
  3. Scan the curator QR code from getsygnet.com/curators
  4. Head to the Forums tab and subscribe to the topics you want

That's it. Curated news, encrypted, sorted by AI, controlled by you.

No account required. No tracking. No algorithm deciding you need to be angrier today.

Your attention belongs to you. Start acting like it.
